Taiwan- ROC
Mainland China - PROCWhat's the difference between the Republic of China (ROC) and the People's Republic of China (PRoC)?
The People's Republic of China is any part of China under control of The Chinese Communist Party, which is what is generally referred to just China these days.
The Republic of China is any part of China under the control of what was once known as the Kuomintang (who ran a nationalistic military dictatorship). Thus, most mainland China before the Chinese Civil War was also known as The Republic of China (when it wasn't occupied by Japan and the Western powers). Now, though, because the communists drove the KMT off mainland China back in the 1940s, The Republic of China is now just Taiwan. I'm pretty sure that they're much more democratic and less extreme now.
ROC is basically Taiwan and PRC is basically the mainland.
Aside from geography, the main difference is different governments. PRC is communist (though if you really look at it now it's somewhat capitalistic) and ROC is a Democracy/Republic.
Another difference is the language. Essentially both speak Chinese (Mandarin being the official language), but the written language is a bit different. PRC uses Simplified Chinese and Taiwan uses Traditional Chinese.
Overall though, it's mainly just 2 different countries with different governments. Think of it like how it is like the USA is between Canada and the UK.
