Really, the Nationalists don't want to return to the mainland -- especially not the younger generation. They just want China to stop threatening them so they can coexist peacefully.

I don't understand your question at all. If Taiwan, (or ROC) or whatever name you want to use, went back to China it would not be independent. It would be a part of China, even if as a Special Administrative Region like Hong Kong and Macau.
If the Republic of China went back to the Mainland, then Taiwanese will need to decide themselves. As this is their land, not others. Taiwan may go for independent as many of them wanted to, even the Republic of China wants to claim it back for themselves as territory or as a provincial state.
Yes. I am confused. The Republic of China is the official name of Taiwan. So ROC is Taiwan. Taiwan is ROC.





If Taiwan does eventually re-unite with Mainland China, I think it would be a SAR like Hong Kong which the PRC (People's Republic of China) mentioned one country two systems.





As in Hong Kong and Macau, I think commercially and daily activiities will not be very much different. The only different may be the political structure as you cannot have a President. I think in Hong Kong they still have some form of elections.

ROC would surely want to continue its illegal occupation of the Taiwan republic. But like another answerer indicated, this view is primarily held by the older members of the KMT, which, fortunately, are not long for this world. By the way, China is not Taiwan's ';mainland';; in other words, Taiwan doesn't have a ';mainland.';
The ROC (which still believes that China is their's lol) will most definitely claim Taiwan.





However, in our world today, I don't think they would be allowed to take Taiwan. It is Taiwan's choice whether to unify.
